Superintendent’s Statement on the Plan to end DACA

The Casa Grande Elementary School District (CGESD) believes in the limitless potential of our students. We take pride in contributing to their hopes, dreams, and ambitions. We believe it is our responsibility to stand by our students when they face adversity, and celebrate with our students as they achieve.

As superintendent of CGESD, I believe in taking a stand on behalf of our students and their families during time of great need. This is one of those times. As I reflect upon the potential effects that the elimination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) might have to our district (some of our employees are DACA recipients), I want to point out that we will have classrooms that need long-term substitute teachers, cafeterias that need servers, and time cards needing to be processed. Our school district is already depleted of people and resources, so this brings me great distress.

I am concerned by the uncertainty related to the elimination of DACA, and I stand by my commitment to ALL students, regardless of the path they took to get here. I support the DACA program and the protection it affords some of our youngest and most vulnerable students, and I call upon all educators to ensure each student feels a sense of security and belonging while at school. They all deserve our best.
