How do I begin substitute teaching?

The Casa Grande Elementary School District leases substitute teachers through Educational Services, Inc. (ESI)  You will need to complete an on-line substitute application at https://educationalservicesinc.com/apply. From there, click “Get Started”, then “Continue” on the consumer report notice, then select Casa Grande Elementary District on the district menu page, then the Substitute Position application.

Applicants possessing a minimum of a bachelor’s degree can be hired as a Substitute Teacher.    Applicants without a bachelor’s degree, but currently enrolled in an elementary education program may be considered as emergency4 substitutes. Substitutes recommended for hire will be leased employees through Educational Services, Inc. (ESI).

To begin work as a substitute teacher in our district you must:

1) possess a valid substitute¹, provisional or standard teaching certificate issued by the Arizona Department of Education2;

2) possess a valid Identity Verified (IVP) fingerprint clearance card issued by the Department of Public Safety3;

3) pass a complete background and reference check; and

4) have a screening interview.

5) Qualified applicants will be referred to Educational Services, Inc. (ESI) for background check and new hire paperwork.  

If you are called for an interview, you will need to submit:

A) a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card or proof you have applied for a card

B) a valid Substitute Teacher Certificate or a completed application, a $60 personal check, money order or cashier’s check payable to AZ Dept. of Education and your official college transcripts evidencing a bachelor's degree. 

Substitute certificates¹ may be used for substitute teaching only and cannot be used to fill a vacancy occurring in a regular position.  A substitute certificate is limited to 120 days of substitute teaching in the same school each school year.

The Human Resources Office can assist you with completing the certificate and fingerprint applications.


Frequently Asked Questions

Can I specify the days I am available?

Yes, you will be asked about your availability if you are hired*.  Later, if your availability changes, you can notify the substitute coordinator of the changes.

Can I only work at certain schools and/or grades?

Yes, you will be asked your preferences at the time of hire*.  Changes can be made through the substitute coordinator.

Will I be able to work 5 days a week?

A substitute teacher is not a full-time position with the District.  Therefore, there is no guarantee of the number of days to be worked. 

When will I get called for jobs?

Most calls are made between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.  Using our automated system, Aesop, you will be able to review and accept jobs in advance.

What is a substitute teacher’s work schedule?

Elementary Schools:   7:30 a.m. — 3:15 p.m.

Middle Schools:          8:15 a.m. — 4:00 p.m.

Will I need to write lesson plans?

For day-to-day jobs you will not be required to write lesson plans.  Teachers generally leave detailed lesson plans in the classroom.  You are expected to follow them to the best of your ability.   If you cannot locate the lesson plans, please advise the school principal and seek direction.  You may need to use a few 5- or 10- minute time filler activities on these days.

For long-term assignments you will be required to complete lesson plans. You will participate in grade level meetings where lesson plans are discussed/prepared and will attend school staff meetings and applicable parent-teacher conferences.

Long-term pay begins after 20 consecutive days in the same classroom.

*Note:  By limiting your available days, specifying certain schools and/or grades you will limit the number of substitute teaching opportunities.

Professional Development

Substitute teachers may take workshops, classes and in-services offered by the District.  Professional Development schedules are available on the District’s web-site under Professional Development.

The District provides new hire substitute teachers with a Substitute Teacher Handbook published by the Substitute Teaching Institute at Utah State University.  You can preview their materials and sign up to receive an e-newsletter on their website at STEDI.org/Subs.

Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card application packets are available by calling 602-223-2279 or you can apply online at http://www.azdps.gov/services/fingerprint.

 Emergency Substitute certificates require an IVP fingerprint clearance card, high school diploma,  official college transcripts and $60 personal check, money order or cashier’s check payable to AZ Dept. of Education.  Certificates are issued for the current school year only.
